Our Water Meeting, Explained Simply

(Well the Mission Creek SubBain Meeting between DWA, CVWD, and MSWD that was a public facing workshop)

Water experts held a public meeting about our groundwater. It was full of charts and big words. Here is what they actually said, in plain language. No science degree needed (though it may be beneficial to our end lol).

You need water to live. So does everyone around you. So when the people who plan our groundwater held a meeting about it, we listened, and now we are going to explain it the simple way.

The meeting was about the Mission Creek Subbasin. That is the underground pool of water our area depends on. The people running it shared how the water is doing and what they plan to do next. Let's break it down.

1. Where does our water come from?

Almost all of our drinking water here in the Coachella Valley comes from underground. Not a lake. Not a river you can see. It sits in the dirt and rock below our feet, soaked in like water in a sponge. We pump it up with wells.

Think of it like this: our water is a savings account buried underground. Rain and mountain runoff make deposits. Every time we pump water for homes, businesses, or yards, that is a withdrawal. If you take out more than you put in, the account shrinks.

That underground pool has a name. It is called an aquifer. Our slice along ID8 and in the city of DHS, of it is the Mission Creek Subbasin.

2. Why is our water different?

Here is the part most people do not know. Our subbasin is boxed in. Underground cracks in the earth called faults act like walls. They wrap around our water and mostly keep it from mixing with the water in the valleys next to us.

Think of it like this: most places share one giant swimming pool of water. We are more like our own small tank with walls around it. When our water drops, help does not just flow in from next door. We mostly have what we have.

Because our tank is small and walled off, two things keep it filled. First, nature: rain and snow in the mountains slowly soak into the ground. Second, imported water: water is piped in from far away and spread on the ground at a special site so it soaks down and refills the aquifer. Refilling the tank on purpose like that is called recharge.

That imported recharge is a big deal. The meeting said that since 2002, about 177,000 acre feet of imported water has been added back into our ground this way. (One acre foot is roughly enough water for two to three homes for a year.)

3. What did the meeting say about how we are doing?

This came straight from their own charts.

The refilling stopped for a while. Around 2021, the imported recharge water was not available for several years. As soon as that happened, the water levels underground started dropping again. In one single year, the account lost 12,527 acre feet more than went back in.

The people running the basin set a rule for themselves: keep the water level from falling below where it was back in 2009, before the steady refilling helped it climb. In plain words, 2009 is the line they promised not to cross.

The short version: our water tank goes up when we refill it and down when we do not. Right now it is doing better than years ago, but it is sensitive. What we take out and put back really matters.

4. How does new building change our water?

This is the part to really understand. Big new development can hit our water in three ways at once. Use, recharge, and contamination. Here is each one in plain language.

One. It uses more water (bigger withdrawals). More houses, more businesses, and especially very thirsty projects pull more water out of the same tank. More straws in the same cup.

Two. It can shrink recharge (smaller deposits). When you pave over open desert with roads, roofs, and parking lots, rain hits concrete instead of soaking into the ground. Less soaking in means less natural refilling of the tank.

Three. It can make the water dirtier (contamination). This one matters for your health. When the water level drops and we pump harder, whatever bad stuff is down there gets more concentrated, because there is less clean water to water it down. Our area already has a known problem with a chemical called chromium-6.

Think of it like this: imagine a glass of water with a pinch of something bad in it. Now pour out half the water. The bad stuff did not leave. It is just stronger in what is left. That is what over-pumping can do to water quality.


5. How this connects to ID-8 and Stronghold

Two local things sit right on top of this same water, which is why they matter here.

ID-8 is the water system that serves people in Sky Valley, Desert Edge, and Indio Hills. It pulls from this same area, so anything that changes ID-8 is really a question about this water.

Stronghold is a company behind what was a proposed large data center project in Coachella and seems to be the same connected company to the one who did the infrastructure for Coachillin in north Palm Springs annexed to Desert Hot Springs. Data centers can use a lot of water. A big new water user in the region is exactly the kind of thing that pulls harder on the tank, which loops back to everything in section 4: more use, and more stress on water levels and quality.

Neither of these is a villain in this post (in reality may be different). The point is simpler: they draw on the same limited water we all depend on, so it is worth knowing how the tank works before big decisions get made.

Why this matters?

Our water is a small, walled-off tank. It fills slowly and empties fast. Every new project that uses water, paves land, or stresses the aquifer touches the same supply your household drinks from.

The planners say more workshops are coming in fall 2026, and the water plan will be open for the public to read. You do not need to be an expert. You just need to understand the basics, and now you do.
